Value Chain Survey for Seaweed Farming in Zanzibar
Good Neighbors Tanzania (GNTZ) is piloting a seaweed growing project in Zanzibar to boost disadvantaged women’s income and climate resilience. Seaweed farming could help Zanzibari women financially, but it faces several obstacles. The Zanzibar Seaweed Farming Project promotes sustainable seaweed farming in Pemba and Unguja. Enhancing the small-scale farmers’ income and environmental conservation are the project’s goals.
The project seeks to encourage women to join production cooperatives, which have market power to ensure a good price for cultivated seaweed, provide group training on modern farming and social skills, improve seaweed productivity, expand its value chain, and provide microfinancing to increase margins. The project hopes to involve marginalized women in seaweed farming cooperatives based on democratic decision-making, freedom of economic development, bundling existing groups and registering into official cooperatives, access to education, health, information, and resources, and reducing domestic violence. The baseline and Value Chain evaluation set GNTZ’s baseline for measuring seaweed project impacts in target locations.

Empowering Sustainable Natural Farming Practices at Nambinzo
GNTZ prepared Natural Farming Master Training (ToT) with the technical support from GNGIF, participants being farmers, GNTZ staff, extension and government officers from the Mbozi district council, with the objective of promoting sustainable agriculture by minimizing the use of synthetic inputs, such as chemical fertilizers, pesticides, genetically modified organisms (GMOs) and Indigenous Micro Organism (IMO), and instead relying on natural processes to maintain soil fertility and plant health. Due to the training, some farmers have already applied the Natural Farming approach they got from the training facilitated by GNTZ.
Key Accomplishments (achievements and milestones reached) Increased adoption and awareness: One of the significant accomplishments of natural farming is the growing adoption and increased awareness among farmers. Some farmers have transitioned from conventional farming methods to natural farming practices, recognizing the importance of sustainable and environmentally friendly approaches.

Coffee Value Chain Analysis in Songwe Region
Good Neighbors Tanzania (GNTZ) has been working with coffee farmers in Songwe
Region since 2015. The GNTZ, in collaboration with Agricultural Marketing and Cooperative Societies (AMCOS)” has implemented the coffee project to support farmers to increase their household income. During the implementation of the project, significant challenges were identified that require interventions through smallholder coffee development projects to unlock the potential of coffee for socio-economic development.
This coffee value chain study aimed at assembling, validating, and making available
the newly generated and/or existing information and knowledge drawn from science and practice (including” farmers’ rich knowledge) inappropriate sources, for
dissemination and extension of the coffee farming project.

Feasibility Study on Tackling the Urban Poverty in Dar es Salaam and Pwani Region
Since 2005, Good Neighbors Tanzania (GNTZ) has been carrying out activities for community development, such as child sponsorship, education, health, and income generation. To this end, it has six regional offices in 8 regions with 12 Community Development Projects (CDP). GNTZ has been engaged through its CDP programmes to cope with urban poverty for decades. However, the need to review its CDP programme has been growing due to the rapid change in the socio-economic environment and the shock of COVID-19 outbreak since 2020.
To aim to design a more effective programme to tackle the urban poor, the accurate assessment of the poverty situation for each CDP should be preceded. The premier purpose of the study is to understand the livelihoods of the urban poor in Dar es Salaam and Pwani, focusing on employment, income-generating activities, household expenditure, and migration. In line with understanding people’s livelihoods, the study also aims to understand the economic structure of each CDP that shapes the everyday economic activities of people.

2021 Hope School Evaluation Result Report
Hope School Project is part of GNTZ support to the education sector. It started in 2012 and has concentrated on 13 schools located in: Dar es Salaam (Mabwepande Tumaini, Kisauke and Maendeleo Secondary Schools, and Nakasangwe Primary School); Pwani (Fukayosi Secondary School); Dodoma (Suli Primary School); Mwanza (Muungano, Iriba, Nfunzi, Buhama, Nyakabanga and Nyamiswi Primary Schools); and Zanzibar (Kwarara Tumaini Secondary School).
The support has aimed at making the school environment a good place to study. Therefore, support included interventions both within and outside of the schools. Within the school, GNTZ has built seven new schools, four of which are secondary schools and three are primary schools. The remaining six schools enjoyed either expansion in terms of the building of new structures within the school or renovating existing structures. In addition to these interventions, GNTZ purchased desks and school materials such as books, computers, and printer. In a few schools, GNTZ also purchased vehicles to enable pupils to travel to school comfortably. Understanding that education is not only about in-class instruction on various subjects, GNTZ has made investment in extracurricular activities such as advocacy clubs and in sports.
